Below are answers to the most common questions we receive about energy compliance reports in Victoria
Do I need an energy compliance report for my project?
In Victoria, energy compliance reports are required for most building permits, including new homes, extensions, alterations, and commercial fit-outs. If you are applying for a building or planning permit, it is highly likely that you will need one. Your Building Surveyor is typically your first point of contact, but you are welcome to reach out to us at any stage to discuss your project and see how we can assist.
What is the difference between NatHERS and Section J?
NatHERS (Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme) applies to residential buildings: Houses, townhouses, and apartments. Section J applies to commercial buildings under NCC Volume 1. They use different assessment methods but both demonstrate compliance with the National Construction Code’s energy efficiency requirements. You can read more details HERE.
Do I need a NatHERS assessment for a renovation or extension?
It depends on the scope of work. Significant alterations or additions typically require compliance documentation. In some cases, a Deemed-to-Satisfy (DtS) report is sufficient rather than a full NatHERS rating. We can advise which pathway applies to your project.
How long does a report take?
We typically deliver the draft report within 3 business days of receiving your plans and project information. For urgent projects, contact us to discuss options.
Who will I be working with?
You deal directly with our accredited assessor throughout the entire process. There are no middlemen and no outsourcing.
What do you need from me to get started?
We generally need your architectural plans (floor plans, elevations, window schedule), a site location, and some basic project details. We’ll let you know if anything else is needed once we have reviewed your drawings.
How much does a compliance report cost?
Pricing depends on the project type, size, and complexity. Contact us for a quick quote. We typically respond within a few hours.
Can you help if my project has already failed compliance?
Yes. We regularly assist with projects that have not passed the first time. We will identify what is needed and work with you on practical, buildable solutions to achieve compliance without unnecessary redesign.
Do you handle both planning and building permit reports?
Yes. We can prepare BlueFactor and ESD reports, BESS scorecard and WSUD assessments for planning permits, as well as NatHERS and Section J reports for building permits. Using one consultant for both reduces delays and avoids conflicting documentation.
